In the competitive world of films and entertainment, Stefanie Peti stands out as a multifaceted personality. The actress and screenwriter had a smashing 2023 as she hit the headlines for the right reasons. With her foray into screenwriting and movie production, she delved into the depths of societal issues, presenting compelling narratives that resonated with audiences.

From tackling mental health in ‘Behind the Front’ to shedding light on the grim reality of drug abuse in ‘2C’, Stefanie Peti’s creative endeavours garnered attention and acclaim. To know more about her, delve into Stefanie’s creative journey, her inspirations, aspirations and the stories she yearns to share with the world.

Q: Stefanie, your name has been echoing in the industry after the successful sale of two screenplays in 2023. Do you feel the weight of expectations on your shoulders for this year?

Stefanie Peti: It was indeed a fruitful year for me professionally. The inspiration was flowing, and I felt driven to share stories that mattered. As I am into 2024 and I embark on this new season, I aim to maintain the same level of dedication and creativity. The goal is to continue growing in the industry and earning respect through meaningful work. Last year was incredibly fulfilling, and I am motivated to replicate that success.

Q: Your projects delve into sensitive topics such as suicide and drug abuse. What prompted you to explore these themes?

Stefanie Peti: The idea for my first project stemmed from the visible impact of depression during the quarantine period. Witnessing the struggles of many, I felt compelled to offer an alternative perspective on overcoming depression. What started as a personal endeavor evolved into ‘Behind the Front,’ a script aimed at touching lives and fostering hope. However, as I completed the script and reflected on it, I found it to be touching and impactful. Similarly, my project ‘2C’ addressing drug abuse emerged from a desire to highlight the importance of balance and moderation in life. Some individuals fall into a pattern of excessive indulgence, leading to depression, loss of identity and self-respect. I crafted this project with those who struggle to set boundaries in mind, aiming to guide them toward self-care and self-awareness.

These issues are particularly prevalent in the United States, and they are evident in the alarming scenes in downtown LA and New York City over the past few years. It’s clear that we are facing a significant social problem, with the root cause often traced back to unhealed childhood traumas. When drugs and excessive partying enter the picture, individuals lose their sense of direction, often unknowingly getting into self-destructive behaviors. My projects delve into these dark themes because I believe in the determination and positive side of the human spirit. The journey of survival is ongoing, marked by stories that never truly conclude.

Q: Why do you choose to write on social issues in your storytelling?

Stefanie Peti: I believe in the power of honest cinema. As creators, we have a moral responsibility to reflect reality and challenge societal norms. I analyze the scripts of every movie I watch. I find myself asking questions like, “What is the true intention behind the character’s mask?” or “What message does the director aim to convey through this scene?” I strongly believe that, as artists, we bear a significant moral responsibility for the messages we communicate to society.

It’s crucial to present something authentic and relevant. In our daily struggles, we experience a range of emotions like pain and sadness because we have constructed a world where perfection is expected from everything and everyone.

However, true art is not about perfection; it’s about expression. It’s about bearing our souls and being vulnerable and honest. Art is like a scar, which is raw and bleeding, filled with every shade of emotion. It is an expression, a feeling of being vulnerable yet honest at the same time. As a creative professional, I feel that movies should leave us with a message, inspiring us to become better versions of ourselves. When I write, I embrace imperfection, recognizing that it’s part of what makes art genuine. When selecting movies to watch, I am very deliberate. That’s why I have such a deep appreciation for independent cinema – it’s raw and unfiltered.

Q: Are there any new stories brewing in your mind for upcoming projects?

Stefanie Peti: Absolutely! Having traveled to over 70 countries and experienced diverse cultures, I have encountered countless stories waiting to be told. I am constantly inspired by human emotions and interactions. While I have several ideas in mind, I am patiently waiting for the perfect moment to bring them to life on screen.

Q: You have expressed a desire to become a director. What draws you to directing your projects?

Stefanie Peti: Directing my own project has been a long-held dream. The desire to direct stems from my deep-rooted belief in the importance of translating the vision because I envision it the way it appeared in my mind while writing the script. I aim to express my creativity freely and authentically, ensuring that every aspect of the production reflects my original vision. For me, directing represents an unparalleled opportunity to exercise creative freedom and bring my ideas in its raw and unfiltered version to the screen.

Q: Could you share some of your favorite movies and scripts that have inspired you?

Stefanie Peti: “Certainly! ‘The City of God,’ ‘Capernaum,’ ‘Cinema Paradiso,’ and ‘Drive My Car’ are among my favorite films for their authenticity and emotional depth. As for scripts, ‘The Whale’ resonated deeply with me for its honesty and multifaceted characters. ‘Past Lifes’ also left a profound impact with its exploration of hidden emotions and vulnerability.

Q: What boosts your creativity and keeps you inspired?

Stefanie Peti: For me, necessity is the mother of invention. Real-life stories and poetry serve as my primary sources of inspiration. I am drawn to the rawness of human experiences and the beauty of language. Each day presents an opportunity to uncover new narratives and explore untapped emotions.

Q: Lastly, what is one of your cherished dreams?

Stefanie Peti: Among my many dreams, one that holds significant meaning is to create a cartoon movie that inspires and educates children. I envision a lighthearted yet impactful story that imparts valuable lessons and sparks the imagination. It’s a dream rooted in the belief that storytelling can shape young minds and instil lifelong values.
