If a particular auteur summons his bat signal, it seems Robert Pattinson may have to move aside for Christian Bale.

The latest addition to the Marvel franchise has not completely ended his ties to the DC universe after all. Bale, who makes his first appearance in the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, is OK with returning to his role as Batman on a condition: It must be at the request of filmmaker Christopher Nolan.

Bale would be willing to star in any project by director Christopher Nolan. He has starred in Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (2005 – 2012).

“I had a pact with Chris Nolan,” Bale said in an interview with Screenrant.

“We said, ‘Hey, look. Let’s make three films if we’re lucky enough to get to do that. And then let’s walk away. Let’s not linger too long.’ In my mind, it would be something if Chris Nolan ever said to himself, ‘You know what, I’ve got another story to tell.’ And if he wished to tell that story with me, I’d be in.”

Although many fans are excited about this news, it’s a little bit too impossible as Nolan is not an active member of the DC film franchise any longer following Zack Snyder’s takeover of Gotham City in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which held Ben Affleck’s debut to the empire.

Affleck came back for Justice League in 2017 before Matt Reeves’ The Batman with Pattinson, which launched early this year.

Recently, Bale confirmed he has yet to see how Pattinson performed as the character despite hearing “wonderful things.”

“I still haven’t seen it. I will see it,” Bale said in an interview with Variety at the Thor: Love and Thunder premiere in Hollywood last week.

“Listen, mate, it’s amazing how few films I see. Every director I work with, I’ve seen a couple of their films, and they’re always looking at me, going, ‘Are you kidding?’ I like to really savor films I don’t watch too many. But I will, I certainly will. Robert is an absolutely wonderful actor. We bumped into each other, talked a little bit about it ahead of time, and I heard wonderful things.”
