Her accomplishments as an actress and a movie star include six Primetime Emmy Award nominations, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. According to a 2010 poll of female readers by Esquire magazine, Christina was named “the sexiest woman in the world” and voted as Best Looking Woman in America that same year.
Christina was born in Tennessee and was raised in Portland, Oregon, and Twin Falls, Idaho, where she became active in local theater. Although she completed her high school in Virginia, she relocated to New York City to pursue a modeling career following her entry into a Seventeen cover contest. She continued to work internationally as a model for over a decade before transitioning into acting.
Throughout her career, Christina had recurring roles in numerous television series, including Beggars and Choosers (2001–2002) and Kevin Hill (2004–2005) before being cast as Joan Holloway on the AMC period drama series Mad Men in 2007, of which she remained a leading cast member until the series’ conclusion in 2015.
She received wide critical acclaim for her role on the series, including six Emmy Awards nominations and multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Ensemble.
According to British Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone, Hendricks has an ideal shape for a woman. While praising Hendrick’s hourglass figure, she said, Christina Hendricks is fabulous. We need more of these role models. There is such a sensation when there is a curvy role model. It shouldn’t be so unusual.”
According to Los Angeles Times, television critic Mary McNamara says Hendricks’ portrayal of Joan has revolutionized perceptions of beauty on television. She has been called the “new modern ideal of Hollywood glamour—full-figured, voluptuous; a throwback to the days of Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, and Veronica Lake.” British designer Vivienne Westwood selected Hendricks to represent her “Get A Life” Palladium jewelry collection in March 2011.
Hendricks has moved away from accepting the term “full-figured” and once lambasted a reporter who used the term while interviewing her. In September 2010, Hendricks commented that the media is too focused on women’s bodies and not their actual talents. “I was working my butt off on [Mad Men], and then all anyone was talking about was my body.
Considered one of the best actresses, Christina Hendricks has made her mark not just as an actress but as a model and everything entertainment.
