Most athletes thrive in the world of sports and often receive praise for their athletic displays. However, people tend to forget another important factor when it comes to praising them: IQ. Although sports is mainly about showcasing their brawns, it also requires IQ in their sports to allow them to reach greater heights. Taylor Gault is a coach who emphasizes the importance of basketball IQ.
Taylor Gault is a basketball coach and former player born in Lake Village, Arkansas. She studied at Conway High School. Taylor averaged eighteen points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals, earning her call ups to All-State and All-Conference for three straight seasons for Arkansas’s highest classification. She was also called up to the All-State All-Tournament team for two seasons, even getting named to the All-star team.
Known for her vertical jump shot, quickness, and points averaged in each game, Taylor was a promising prospect for several colleges and universities. Eventually, she received a full basketball scholarship from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. It was in college that Taylor developed a Basketball IQ.
In her freshman year in 2012, Taylor appeared in all thirty-three games and started in all of them except one. She led the team in points, racking up 527 points, and scored an average of 16. Taylor made history for a freshman as her 527 points were a UALR freshman record, the most scored by any first-year player in the Sun Belt Conference. She was named the 2012 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and was named Most Outstanding Performer after averaging 22.7 points in three games, including a career-high 29 against South Alabama in the opening round.
Taylor’s future seemed set to be a promising one. However, over the years, she went from leading the team in points to starting on the bench. Throughout her entire senior year, Taylor spent more time on the bench than on the court.
“I was stuck in my ways,” she confessed, “I couldn’t see where I needed to develop. Even though my coaches told me my defense was terrible, I didn’t grow passionate enough to figure out how I could become a better player.”
Since graduating from college, Taylor went overseas to get a brief amount of experience. The ordeal proved to be useful as she now dedicates her life to ensuring that children know how to play basketball the right way. As a coach, Taylor has a proven basketball philosophy that she teaches to help the next generation of players develop basketball IQ. Taylor also uses her position as coach to raise awareness and discuss life after basketball. She uses the lessons she learned as an athlete to correlate with things in life. Taylor teaches kids to develop a relentless, mindless work and financial ethic at an early age.
Having settled into life after the game, Taylor Gault hopes to have a team that travels nationwide and continues using her platform to speak to kids and train them. She is also planning on creating a clothing brand as well as writing a book.
