Ever since the pandemic struck and quarantine protocols were called to action, people have been finding ways to keep themselves preoccupied or entertained. TikTok, a viral app that runs similar to Vines, has been many people’s go-to source of entertainment, with influencers like Marquise Mason bringing them the much-needed stress relief.
Marquise Mason is just one of the thousands of influencers making their content on TikTok. The nineteen-year-old influencer is born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and has only recently graduated from high school.
Like many of his fellow millennials, Marquise was often bombarded with questions that asked where he would go and what career he would take. The questions often lingered in his head, and he would often take the time to get on his roof to pray as the sunset on the horizon, asking God to make way for him. To take his mind off such matters, Marquise would get on his phone and surf the web.
He would encounter TikTok, a video-sharing social networking service that runs video clips lasting three to fifteen seconds. Here he found an outlet that showcased people’s creativity with clips of music, lip-sync, dance, comedy, or other talents. Marquise signed on, taking the first step to his rise to internet fame.
Taking the username ‘imquise,’ Marquise went into TikTok, where he knew he could find people who shared his humor. His first entry saw him taking on a challenge where people reached out to halt their ceiling fans, earning him his first thousand views. Marquise followed it up with an optical illusion of a man’s silhouetted face that spelled out the word ‘liar,’ getting him nearly eighty thousand views.
Having always been a fan of optical illusions and the like, Marquise decided to focus more on his content to share some of his favorite illusions. He would include memes as showcased in one video questioning how Mr. Krabs of Spongebob would wear his hat. The video also includes a snippet of him showing his dancing skills, something he would incorporate in his other videos.
Marquise Mason made his breakthrough with a more interactive optical illusion where the viewers would gently shake their phones to see the image move. He posted the video with no particular thought about it and headed off to bed. Marquise was surprised the following day to see that his video managed to garner 300,000+ views overnight. Since that day, he’s found himself in the spotlight, attracting over four thousand followers and joining the ranks of TikTok influencers.
From there, Marquise has continued posting videos that makes his followers either laugh or scratch their heads as they attempt to figure out the illusions. Many of his videos often reach a thousand likes or more, encouraging him to continue entertaining his followers and people who happen to stumble into his channel.
Marquise Mason hopes to continue doing what he loves in the years to come and encourage other newly-graduates to work towards a career that they love and paying no mind to the people telling them they can’t make it.
