The media have unfairly treated Britney Spears for more than a decade following a public mental breakdown in 2007. A year later, a conservatorship was placed on her, which put her estate and fortune in the hands of a legal guardian—her father, Jamie Spears, who took the responsibilities. However, the appointment resulted in the singer’s silence for thirteen years. However, on June 23, 2021, Britney Spears finally spoke publicly.
For thirteen years, Jamie Spears controlled the singer’s finances, professional life, and even personal life after a legal arrangement put him in the position. For the first time, Britney spoke publicly, calling for an end to the conservatorship, describing it as “abusive,” and even expressing her desire to have her father, management, and other parties involved thrown into jail. During a twenty-four-minute hearing, she made multiple revelations about the agreement.
“This conservatorship is doing me more harm than good,” she said, “I deserve to have a life. I’ve worked my whole life. I deserve to have a two to three year break and just, you know, do what I want to do. The pop princess described her situation, revealing how she felt bullied, left out, and alone. “I’m tired of feeling alone,” Britney elaborated, “I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does.”
Her public declarations were met with positive reactions from her fans, supporters, singers, and public figures online. Many of whom applauded her bravery and courage for finally speaking up.
Mariah Carey was among the first to take to Twitter to show her support for Britney after the hearing, tweeting, “We love you Britney!!! Stay strong.”
Halsey followed, writing, “Bless Britney and I hope with my whole heart she is awarded freedom from this abusive system. She deserves it more than anything. I admire her courage, speaking up for herself today.” She later added, “Additionally, f**k anyone who thinks they have the authority as an institution or individual to control a person’s reproductive health. #FreeBritney.”
Actress Rose McGowan joined them by saying, “Britney Spears has every right to be angry. How would you feel if your life was stolen, dissected, mocked? I pray she gets to live your life on her terms. STOP CONTROLLING WOMEN.”
Nickelodeon alumnus Keke Palmer took to both Twitter and Instagram to express her support, tweeting, “Got y’all asses! ITS OVER #FreeBritney crazy mfs.” Palmer wrote on Instagram, “My girl was finally able to speak up against her conservatorship after they tried to make her fear damaging her ‘image’ just to keep her quiet! How cruel to do that to someone that has only known performing her whole life. Then to contort the very thing she loved by making her do it on YOUR time. For the love of money is the root of all evil! But the light will always win, I’m so happy that Britney was able to tell the truth today and I’m ready to raise hell! FREEEEEE BRITNEYYYYY.”
Even the pop princess’ ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, who spent months apologizing for his past behavior, supported her call to dismiss the conservatorship, tweeting, “After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time. Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was…what’s happening to her is just not right. No woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body.”
