Storytelling is an important part of the entertainment industry, and Nichelle Colvin is one of the few musicians that tell stories with their music. She is a multi-genre musician from Gary, Indiana, signed to SSGM Records. Nichelle Colvin is trying to push her brand to a point where she is known for the messages she passes with her music. While drawing inspiration from music legends like Anita Baker, Phyllis Hyman, The Emotions, Jean Carne, Angela Windbush, Luther, The Jones Girls, The Jacksons, Barbra Streisand, Julie Andrews, The Winans, Sting, Eryka Badu, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight, Nichelle Colvin is focused on creating her own distinct sound and making a name in the cut-throat industry.
She has scored collaborations with rapper Decagon AKA Gon and Mike Carson, the saxophonist that Nichelle helped produce his debut record, “Signature.” She recently released “Nichelle’s Color Purple Soundtrack,” on which she feat. “Ideal” and “Decagon AKA Gon”. Since its release, she has gotten nothing but rave reviews and positive feedback from her fans. The most prevalent theme in all her songs borders around life and its intricacies. Her lyrics and message are things many people can relate to; thus, her audiences worldwide get an emotional connection each time Nichelle’s soulful voice comes on.
Nichelle Colvin’s singing career kicked off in church at the Rosa Jackson Youth Choir at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church. She got a Billboard Award for each of the songs she wrote during her sophomore year in college. Her debut LP record, “Relations 1,” was sold out, and it earned her a licensing deal with Street Culture Records, which was her first-ever licensing deal in the UK. She released a second record, which caught Cafedesoul Records’ attention, and they offered her a deal too. She released a compilation titled “Language of Love,” which was featured in Echoes Magazine. For an artist with only two official releases, she seemed to be moving too fast. Her third record got some traction in the United States and caught the attention of Taste Records. Nichelle’s fourth album is entitled “Soulfully Yours, Nichelle.”
For each of her songs, Nichelle tries to tell a story, which has gotten so many people drawn to her music. Connecting with her audience has always been effortless for her, and she has some notable performances to her name. Her collaborative effort with Darron McKinney in the song, “A Call to Courage” moved her audience to get emotional and moved when she performed it at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Candlelight Vigil in Washington, DC in May 2001. Everyone present, including the 18,000 law enforcement officers and their families, had something nice to say about her performance. She also went on to perform the song live on Detroit Fox News.
Nichelle Colvin has released songs such as “Touch Me Right” remix feat. Legendary Rah Digga (2017), “Relieve Her Stress” feat. Legendary Keith Murray (2018), and “What He Does to Me” feat. Legendary Chubb Rock (2019). To her audience, Nichelle says, “You are entering a new realm with me; let’s have some fun.”
Her latest song, “Infectious,” is used in an animation project she’s working on. The project features rapper, “Swigg.” She loves animations a lot, and she tries to infuse her music with animated shorts that tell important stories. Over the next five years, she plans to take her music to a larger scale while putting out more story projects as well as animation shorts.
