What is the inspiration?
The Mangerie Manifesto event is the 4th chapter of my debut collection, Prismatic Nirvana. Inspired by the introspective exploration of self and what it looks like when you let go of societal expectations to find yourself creatively, culturally, and individually. You’ll see imagery from universal principles, individualism, tribal culture, anime, disco, hip-hop, pop culture, fine art, meditation, and so on. Each installation of Prismatic Nirvana takes a deeper dive into what Void Asylum° is genuinely about and helps make our call to freedom louder! It’s important that I make an individualized identity for my brand and announce myself appropriately. Instead of defining these things by one collection presentation, I will define them by unique eras, with unique imagery, innovation, and strong ideas. A huge inspiration for me is Janet Jackson’s Velvet Rope era. She first released a deeply personal collection of songs, followed by videos (imagery), world tours(live shows), additional songs, clothing, documentaries, and other things that extended her story for a longer period of time, commercially and critically. I usually look outside of fashion to be inspired because, within most things, fashion is already there, waiting to be explored.
As fashion professionals, we are always so pressured to produce, produce, produce, and we are expected to put out new collections with new inspirations and stories before we are even afforded the time to fully express our concept. And in the age of fast fashion and drop ship design, people are releasing garments faster than ever.
What is the Vibe of the Show?
The Menagerie Manifesto is an immersive fashion show experience featuring Void Asylum’s new luxury streetwear collection & Samsung-Exclusive digital art & photography exhibit, and documentary screening. The joyous energy will also be because we are in celebration of my recent award from Dapper Dan & Puma, the Next-Generation Designer Award. You can expect a fusion of old school, new school, sustainability, art, and technology, and I’ll even be live-demonstrating how I create the art using Samsung’s folding phones & tablets.
How do you prepare for a fashion show?
Preparing for a show is hard because designing a collection on paper, actually creating the samples, and then putting together the actual show are three huge & equally important tasks. I honestly don’t know how I do it, I’m on auto-pilot after a certain point, but somehow I figure it out. As an independent designer, It’s important to acquire the right freelancers & interns to help fill in the gaps until I get a full-time staff, and of course, I use all of my education from FIT and work in the NYC garment industry for over a decade, and it gets done.
