Professional boxers and entrepreneurs tend to have a lot more in common than what most people think. When a boxer takes a foot inside the ring and when an entrepreneur starts a business, both are eagerly determined, laser-focused, and most of the time, bold. Yahu Blackwell happens to have both titles, being a professional boxer and a successful entrepreneur. Over the past years, this Nigerian descent has been investing his time, effort, and money in launching his new business venture called Rita’s Italian Ice.
Before all the success he has achieved today, Yahu Blackwell came from humble beginnings. Born in Baltimore, he grew up in a rough environment without a father figure and very little money. Boxing was his way out from the rough streets he was in. At the age of seven, he started competing in boxing. Since then, he turned fights into winning battles, which gained him numerous titles. The World Boxing Union had named him as the novice world champion. On top of this, he compiled a record of 15-0 in the International Boxing League. In totality, Blackwell’s fights earned him a 156-28 amateur record.
Over the years, he gained a badass fighter’s reputation and even got the chance to be trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr., Freddie Roach, Roger Mayweather, and Roberta Jalnaiz. Unfortunately, Blackwell suffered a loss during his professional debut in 2009. His determination went overboard, leading to hand fractures after cutting too much weight and dehydration after losing an unhealthy amount of weight. Despite earning an estimated net worth of $5 million, he somehow realized how short life could be. This realization propelled him to venture into the world of entrepreneurship.
Outside the boxing ring, Blackwell decided to grow as a businessman. His boxing field experience taught him a strong work ethic, which is needed in the business world. As a matter of fact, he easily closed a franchise deal back in 2017 with Rita’s Italian Ice. It is an American restaurant chain that sells Italian frozen treats. Currently, he owns several Rita’s Italian Ice outlets across Baltimore city, with Jess Hilarious as the official marketing ambassador. This strategic partnership will bring more customers as Jess has a massive following all over the country.
As to the reason why he pursued a franchise deal from the said ice cream brand, he said, “I always foresaw myself as being a businessman one day. A lot of athletes and entertainers end up broke when their careers come to an end, and I didn’t want to be counted among them. I chose Rita’s because it was my mother’s favorite place for dessert. It was literally one of her last requests before she passed. I hope I made her proud.”
He considers this business venture as another source of income aside from boxing. “My goal is to earn more outside of the boxing ring than in it,” Blackwell shared. Despite not going to college and having no formal business education, Yahu Blackwell is dead set on becoming the richest athlete from Baltimore. He is also eyeing franchising Auntie Anne’s and investing in real estate projects in the area he grew up in.
Without a doubt, Blackwell is winning in the entrepreneurial scene just as well he’s doing good in the boxing ring. For more information about him, check him out on YouTube. Follow him on Instagram and Twitter for updates.
