Bev Johnson is undeniably one of those legendary figures. Born in the vibrant city of Memphis, Tennessee, but with roots stretching to Ann Arbor, Michigan, Bev Johnson has spent over four decades captivating audiences with charm, wit, and unparalleled talent.  

From her humble beginnings, Bev Johnson’s journey to radio stardom is a testament to perseverance and dedication. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Rust College and a master’s degree in Educational Media Technology from Jackson State University, Bev honed her skills and laid the foundation for what would become an illustrious career.  

Bev’s tenure in the industry spans an impressive 48 years, with an astounding 41 of those years dedicated to WDIA, a historic radio station known for its significance in African American culture. It was here that Bev truly made her mark, becoming the beloved host of “The Bev Johnson Show” for an incredible 41 years. Her voice became a beacon of light for listeners, offering companionship, laughter, and wisdom.  

Despite facing personal challenges, Bev Johnson’s resilience and passion for her craft never wavered. Her commitment to excellence extended beyond the studio walls, as evidenced by her involvement in counseling certification in Substance Abuse from Southwest Tennessee Community College.

With a fondness for colors like red, black, and lavender and a palate that savors the flavors of turnip greens, hot water cornbread, and Greek Caesar salad, Bev embodies a blend of sophistication and down-home comfort.  

Her musical tastes reflect a deep appreciation for the soulful rhythms of Stax and Motown artists and the velvety tones of legends like Sarah Vaughn, Phyllis Hyman, and Nancy Wilson.  

As a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Inc., Bev embodies the values of sisterhood and service. She lives by the motto, “As you treat yourself, you will treat others.” This ethos is reflected in her most cherished awards, including nominations for the NAB Marconi Award and recognition from esteemed organizations like UNCF and the Memphis Music Commission.
