As the son of a former professional guitarist, there is little wonder why Lucas Muñoz turned out to be a guitarist, singer and songwriter. According to the Central Florida-born singer, he started learning when he was four, and through his childhood to middle school, he played guitar in his local church choir.
Muñoz moved to Florida in 2010, at just 14 years old, to pursue his music career. By the time he arrived at Warner University for his undergraduate degree, he had become heavily involved with performing arts. He subsequently played guitar in the University’s chapel band and jazz ensemble. Muñoz became influenced by guitarists such as Joe Bonamassa, Slash, Gary Moore, and Eric Johnson.
Muñoz released his debut EP titled “Mutasis” in 2020. The EP, a combination of dark pop, hip-hop, blues, rock, and alternative, showcases all of Muñoz’s musical influences. Lucas admits that getting out of his comfort zone as a musician distinguishes him from his competition, particularly the older generation. He expressed that remaining confined to a particular genre is one of the pitfalls for older musicians. But as a young blood, he believes his ability to alternate between genres and styles keeps him ahead in his game.
As a Gen Z, Lucas hopes to reach people from his generation and strive to have his music resonate with a global audience. His music also addresses topics such as mental health, which was considered a taboo in preceding generations.
On what motivated him to build his brand, Muñoz said, “I wanted to create music that spoke directly to anyone that struggled with depression, anxiety, and loneliness.” He recalled how his struggles in life prompted him to build a brand for himself. As a victim of bullying, while growing up as a child, his weight factor also contributed to people making fun of him at school. All of these contributed to him struggling with his mental health as a teenager and young adult. “Music became the only adult that I found to help me drown out all my pain. Music helped me embrace my individuality and my weirdness to express myself without fear of judgment. Music helped me improve myself and try to get healthy. I wanted to build my brand to help others that feel misunderstood, shunned, or ignored,” he explained.
When asked where he sees himself five years from now, he said “I see myself doing what I love the most, and that is performing in front of people and writing and recording music. I want to make an impact on as many lives as I can in the future. I want to give happiness to people that are struggling every day through music. I want to work with like-minded people within the industry to make music that speaks for my generation. I see myself being able to make a career being in the music industry. I see myself as a role model for younger people and relating to them through my music.”
