The Tragic Story of Nothing: The World’s Unluckiest Band

In music, there are countless tales of triumph and success, but there are also stories of heartbreak and disappointment. One such story is that of Nothing, which has become known as the world’s unluckiest band. Despite their talent and hard work, Nothing has faced numerous setbacks, leaving them struggling to find their place in the music industry.

A Promising Start

Nothing’s story began in 2010 when guitarist and vocalist Domenic Palermo formed the band in Philadelphia. Palermo had been a member of the hardcore punk band Horror Show, but he wanted to explore a different sound with Nothing. The band’s music blends shoegaze, post-punk, and indie rock, with Palermo’s emotional vocals at the forefront.

The band’s first EP, “Downward Years to Come,” was released in 2012 to critical acclaim. The EP showcased the band’s impressive musicianship and songwriting skills, and it helped them build a loyal fan base. However, the band’s debut album, “Guilty of Everything,” put them on the map. Released in 2014, the album received widespread praise from critics and fans alike, with many calling it one of the best albums of the year.

Setbacks and Tragedies

Despite the success of “Guilty of Everything,” Nothing’s journey has been plagued by setbacks and tragedies. In 2015, the band was supposed to embark on a European tour with fellow indie rockers Merchandise, but the tour was abruptly canceled when Palermo was arrested in Germany. Palermo had been involved in a fight several years earlier, and the charges had caught up with him. He was held in a German prison for several months before being released on bail.

The cancellation of the European tour was just the beginning of Nothing’s troubles. In 2016, the band was set to release their second album, “Tired of Tomorrow,” but just days before the release date, Palermo’s father passed away. Palermo was devastated by the loss of his father, and the band decided to postpone the album’s release.

In spite of the obstacles and circumstances, “Tired of Tomorrow” was eventually released in May 2016, and it was another critical success for the band. However, tragedy struck again when the band’s drummer, Brandon Setta, lost his mother to cancer just a few weeks after the album’s release. Setta took a break from the band to mourn his loss, and the future of Nothing was once again uncertain.

Moving Forward

Despite the past several years’ setbacks and tragedies, Nothing persevered. The band’s third album, “Dance on the Blacktop,” was released in 2018, another critically acclaimed release. The album showcased the band’s growth and maturity, with Palermo’s songwriting reaching new heights.

Today, Nothing is still making music and touring, but the band is no longer signed to a major label. Palermo has spoken openly about the difficulties of being an independent band in today’s music industry, but he remains committed to the band and its fans. Nothing may be the world’s unluckiest band, but they are also one of the most talented and resilient.

Final Thoughts

The story of Nothing is a reminder that success in the music industry is never guaranteed. Despite the band’s talent and hard work, they have faced numerous setbacks and tragedies that have made their journey difficult. However, the band’s perseverance and dedication to their craft have allowed them to continue making music and connecting with their fans.
