The worlds of finance and filmmaking might seem like polar opposites. One is for math nerds, the other is for geeks – and rarely do they intersect. However, Toronto entrepreneur and asset manager Bardya Ziaian has carved a path that blends the two. Known for his achievements in fintech (financial technology – think banking apps, stock apps, etc.), Ziaian has recently turned heads as an indie filmmaker with bold ambitions to offer an alternative to the traditional Hollywood studio model. His story is emblematic of a larger trend: successful professionals from the world of finance and tech investing in their own creative ventures to bring fresh energy to filmmaking.
Before stepping behind the camera, Bardya Ziaian was the founder of BBS Securities Inc. and Virtual Brokers. He played a key role in transforming online investing, earning accolades such as the “Best Online Broker in Canada” from The Globe and Mail. As the CEO of SITTU Group Inc., Ziaian continues to push the boundaries of fintech, helping businesses adapt to emerging technologies like decentralized finance (DeFi).
“Fintech has made financial services accessible to everyone,” says Ziaian. “Whether you’re a gig worker or a corporate professional, these innovations can help you manage your money and reach your goals.”
This problem-solving mindset, honed through years of navigating the fast-paced world of finance, has proven invaluable in Ziaian’s latest venture: filmmaking.
Film has always been a passion for Bardya Ziaian, but like many such creative dreams, it took a backseat to his burgeoning career. But after finding business success, he realized he could give life to his passion. He created a production company as an offshoot of his consulting firm, Sittu Group, and produced and co-wrote the indie comedy Super Dicks. The film faced significant hurdles, including the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Ziaian’s entrepreneurial instincts came into play. He adapted quickly, implementing strict safety protocols to keep the production going, and provided much-needed jobs for actors and crew during a challenging time.
“Being an entrepreneur is all about problem-solving,” Ziaian explains. “That mindset carried over to filmmaking, where I had to think creatively to keep the project on track.”
Ziaian’s dual roles on Super Dicks showed his ability to wear many hats—a skill he attributes to his experience in managing fintech startups. “Success comes when you surround yourself with talented people and delegate effectively,” he says.
A New Vision for Filmmaking
Ziaian is part of a growing movement of entrepreneurs using their resources and innovative thinking to disrupt the film industry. These new players challenge the traditional studio model by funding independent projects, embracing diverse distribution channels, and taking risks that larger studios often shy away from.
For Ziaian, the shift in filmmaking mirrors changes he’s witnessed in fintech. “The industry is diversifying,” he notes. “Streaming platforms and alternative funding models are opening doors for independent creators. It’s an exciting time for filmmakers.”
His experience in fintech has also shaped his perspective on innovation. From emerging technologies to decentralized finance, Ziaian has always been drawn to transformative ideas. Similarly, his approach to filmmaking prioritizes fresh stories and unconventional methods—an ethos that reflects his belief in breaking barriers.
As he balances his career in fintech with his ambitions in filmmaking, Bardya Ziaian represents a new breed of entrepreneur: one who sees art and commerce not as conflicting pursuits but as complementary avenues for creation. With Super Dicks under his belt and other projects on the horizon, Ziaian is demonstrating that the skills honed in the boardroom can translate beautifully to the big screen.
At a time when both industries are evolving rapidly, Ziaian’s story is a reminder that creative thinking and entrepreneurial drive can open doors in any field. Whether in finance or filmmaking, the future belongs to those willing to take risks and challenge the status quo.
