We were able to sit down with Rachana for a brief Q and A :
Is there a personal story about you, a friend, or a family member that helped inspire you or inform what you do?
Yes, me. I was in the same position. I have always been a keen sportswoman; I was a gymnast and was fortunate to play lacrosse for England and compete in 2 world cups. An athlete’s performance is based on their mental game; this is something I had cultivated as a child with the different sports. It has shaped my thinking and contributed to my success off the sports field. In fact, I adopt many of the mindset strategies that come naturally to me in my coaching.
Before having my children and graduating from Durham University, UK, I worked at magic circle law Firm and a top-tier investment bank before moving to the US and starting my “married” life. We moved around with my husband’s job, so I was always somewhere long enough to settle and start the business I wanted to pursue. Shortly after, I lost my younger brother to cancer. It turned my world upside down. When he was sick, I spoke to him about starting a coaching business for women. I promised him that I would give it a go. He always had faith in me, but it never seemed the right time for some reason. It took me ten years (2 kids later) to find the courage to embark on the promise I made him. As each year passed, the feeling of guilt grew more substantial, and I had let yet another year pass without really knowing how I would help women and whom? Finally, I knew I had to do something. And that is when I started. I have never looked back. In hindsight, I needed to go through my life, feel the highs, the lows and the struggles of not knowing the what or the why in some cases, by knowing that I needed to do it. I can relate to my clients now so well, and it’s sometimes like reading their minds. It’s a fantastic connection, incredibly gratifying and rewarding, and I am privileged to walk part of their life journey with them.
What is your best advice to mothers reading this who wonder how they can get back on an even keel and kickstart their professional path again?
Absolutely. The key is knowing where you want to go. Be clear on what it is you want to do. You can wait for a few years and see if it comes to you, or you can be proactive and hire a coach to get you there faster. If you get the right coach, it can be transformational. My first step was hiring my coach, (Alma) who was pivotal to my success. I knew I had to invest in myself. If I wasn’t prepared to, then why would anyone else? I wanted to be able to provide top-tier coaching that yields results. Why? Because that was what I was after. I had my fill of self-help books, manifestation, and workshops, but I still needed to be where I needed to be. I know firsthand what my clients want and need because it is what I need. I went through the pain of figuring it out, and I don’t want others to go through that. Finally, just do it. What is the worst that can happen? It doesn’t work out, but you tweak it more often than not, and things begin to work. You would never expect to hit a hole-in-one the first time you ever picked up a golf club, right? It’s just like that. You don’t just throw in the towel and decide that golf is not your sport. You hire a coach who guides you, then practice, learn and tweak the process so you hit that hole-in-one.
