National recording artist Kevin Davidson has long been a beloved figure in the world of gospel music, known for penning and performing soul-stirring songs that continue to resonate with listeners. One of his most widely recognized hits, Born to Win (2000), remains a staple in gospel circles, with choirs and soloists delivering the uplifting anthem with fervor, echoing its message of triumph. On Friday, August 19, Davidson marked an incredible milestone—30 years in the music business—with a grand musical tribute at The Rock Church Memphis.
Davidson’s influence in gospel music spans decades. With a catalog filled with chart-topping hits, he has cemented his place in gospel music history as one of the most prolific and passionate songwriters of his generation. Songs like Fight On (1998), Count Your Blessings (1998), and Our God is Awesome (1998) showcase his ability to create music that moves the spirit and stirs the soul. His more recent works, such as Bounce Back (2005), Church Let’s Rock (2014), and Something Happens (2014), continue to showcase his versatility and creativity in blending traditional gospel sounds with contemporary influences.
The tribute event was a celebration of Davidson’s 30-year legacy and featured performances from several top gospel artists, including Grammy Award-winning singer LeAndria Johnson, chart-topping artist James Fortune, the Rev. Tim Rogers, Nakitta Foxx, the Rev. Chris Williams, and Nate Bean & 4Given. In addition to these powerhouse performances, the original lead singers of Kevin Davidson & The Voices, the group that helped elevate Davidson to national prominence, also took the stage to honor their former leader.
Hosted by the Rev. Darrel Petties and directed by the Rev. Courtney Franklin, both accomplished recording artists, the tribute was a reflection of the respect and admiration Davidson commands within the gospel community. As gospel artists sang and musicians played, the event underscored the profound influence that Davidson’s music and ministry have had on countless lives, both in Memphis and beyond.
Reflecting on his journey, Davidson acknowledged that his success was shaped by the guidance of gospel legends like the late Rev. James Moore from Detroit and the late O’landa Draper, a Grammy Award-winning choir director from Memphis. These two titans of gospel music had a profound impact on Davidson’s life and career, but ultimately, Davidson gives the glory to a higher power. “It’s just the Lord,” he says. “The lyrics just come to me.”
Davidson’s deep roots in faith and music were nurtured by his mother, an evangelist at Mt. Zion Temple Church of God in Christ in Memphis, who raised him in the church after his father passed away when he was just five years old. His spiritual journey continued as he grew, eventually leading him to be licensed and ordained by Apostle Lawrence Braggs of Trumpet of Zion Ministries in Little Rock, Arkansas. Today, Davidson serves as the founder and chief apostle of the Dominion Church in Memphis.
Davidson’s road to gospel stardom was not initially clear. As a high school student at East High School in Memphis, he was more focused on athletics, particularly basketball. However, after graduating in 1989, he felt a shift toward music, a decision that has since defined his life and career.
As a father of six, Davidson hopes to leave behind a legacy that his children will cherish. While none of his children have pursued music, his career and body of work stand as a testament to the power of faith and perseverance. He also credits his wife for supporting him throughout his journey.
Looking ahead, Davidson plans to release a new album in 2024 on the LVP Entertainment, Inc. record label, a project that is sure to build on his already storied career. Beyond that, he will be honored again on September 29 in Nashville, Tennessee, at Morning Star Baptist Church—a fitting acknowledgment for a man who has cemented his legacy among gospel’s greatest jewels.
Kevin Davidson’s music has struck a chord in the hearts of many, and after 30 years in the industry, his influence shows no signs of waning.
