Kurt ‘KC’ Clayton is a dynamic and multifaceted figure in the music industry, with a career that spans decades and showcases his versatility and talent. As a two-time Grammy-nominated producer, songwriter, arranger, and artist, Clayton’s journey into the world of music began at a very young age. Recognizing his deep passion for music, he made the pivotal decision to pursue it as a profession. This led him to the University of Memphis, where he honed his skills and laid the foundation for what would become an illustrious career. 

Clayton’s commitment to his roots and the Memphis music scene is evident in his current role as a professor at the University of Memphis, where he teaches Introduction to the Music Industry. His dedication to nurturing the next generation of music professionals is just one aspect of his involvement in the local music community. As the President of the Memphis Chapter of N.A.R.A.S. (The GRAMMYs), Clayton plays a significant role in shaping the future of the music industry in Memphis. His influence extends further as a board member of The Rock and Soul Museum and as a commissioner with the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission, where he has served as Chairman on the Executive Board. 

Clayton’s expertise is vast, covering areas such as production, songwriting, programming, music direction, arranging, and musicianship. These skills have allowed him to collaborate with some iconic names in the music industry, including Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, Chaka Khan, and the Academy Award-winning rap group Three-6-Mafia. His ability to navigate multiple genres—ranging from rap, jazz, pop, rock, gospel, and R&B to country—speaks to his versatility and the breadth of his talent. 

Clayton’s work has also made a significant impact in the world of film and television. His contributions to soundtracks for movie and DVD projects have been recognized and appreciated by a wide audience, including projects associated with television mogul Oprah Winfrey and the controversial Larry Flint. His ability to seamlessly transition between different types of media and genres further cements his status as a highly sought-after professional in the industry. 

In recognition of his outstanding production skills, Clayton earned a Grammy nomination in 2003 for his work with recording artist Ann Nesby, formerly of Sounds of Blackness. The following year, he received another Grammy nomination for his work with The Canton Spirituals. His collaborations have included work with notable figures such as David Foster, Boney James, R&B legend Howard Hewett, and the 2006 Academy Award-winning rap group Three-6-Mafia. 

Clayton’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to form “KC” Productions, a music and film company that allowed him to further explore his creative vision. Through this company, he has the opportunity to work with various artists he has signed for music and motion picture projects. His achievements in the music industry not only highlight his talent but also demonstrate his love and passion for all music. Kurt “KC” Clayton is undeniably a force to be reckoned with in the world of music, and his contributions continue to shape the industry in significant ways.
