Renowned cartoonist and master teaching artist Joe Young captivated an audience of over 100, mainly youth and parents, at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford, Connecticut, for a free cartoon workshop and the launch of the latest iteration of “Kemet the Time Traveler” Juneteenth edition comic book that coincided with the historic celebration of Juneteenth. Capital City Mayor Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam and Connecticut Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas joined Young and the youth.
Through engaging storytelling and innovative academic programs, Young empowered youth with knowledge while commemorating the resilience and achievements of African Americans throughout history.
At the core of this groundbreaking project is Kemet, a 10-year-old comic character who embarks on an extraordinary journey through time in his time machine, Sankofa 82. This project showcases the remarkable accomplishments of African Americans. Readers will embark on a thrilling voyage through the pages of Kemet’s adventures, uncovering inspiring tales and pivotal moments in Black history.
“I launched Kemet on Juneteenth because the character symbolizes the emancipation of slavery in the US and celebrates the enduring resilience and triumphs of African Americans,” stated creator Joe Young. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont declared Juneteenth 2024, Joe Young Day, to honor Joe’s legacy as an artist, educator, cartoonist, and producer.
In the comic book, Kemet undertakes an impactful mission to enlighten and unite middle schoolers, guiding them to a deeper understanding of Juneteenth’s significance.
Addressing misconceptions and historical truths, Kemet confronts pivotal figures such as President Lincoln and General Gordon Granger while spotlighting the contributions of individuals like Al Edwards,
known as “The Father of Juneteenth.” Kemet and the kids also witnessed President Joe Biden signing the Juneteenth Bill into law.
