Family is often very influential. They play a role in nurturing people’s interests as they grow and often provide them with the tools to turn their interests into a passion. Musician, actor, and journalist Deven Powers, also known as Mr.Hollywood, can attest to this, having been influenced and encouraged by his family in his upbringing.
Deven Powers was born under the name Deven Lavale Purifoy in San Bernardino, California. He is the tenth of fourteen children born to a Pastor and a gospel singer. Coming from a home with a singer, it was inevitable that Deven would take up an interest in music. By nine years old, Deven started playing drums. He showed so much promise and dedication to the instrument and continued playing for years. At thirteen years old, Deven was gifted with his very first drum set. It was given to him by the legendary funk group The Gap Band.
The same year he got his drum set, Deven became California’s State Drummer in his church congregation. It was around that time that Deven dedicated his life to God. He would later attend Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley, California. In Deven’s freshman year, he joined the marching band and would go on to win several championships.
The years that followed saw Deven go beyond music and delve into several other ventures. In 2010, he adopted the stage name Deven “Mr.Hollywood” Powers and took a shot at the entertainment industry, working as an extra for several Hollywood films, TV shows, and commercials. He enjoyed his stint and was patient as he waited for a breakthrough.
Eventually, Deven’s patience bore fruit, and his TV and radio song “Rick James” became a hit in 2016. From there, his career started to pick up. Two years later, Deven Powers was given the opportunity of a lifetime when he was invited to host one of the biggest film festivals in Los Angeles, The LA Live Film Festival. He would continue hosting the event for three consecutive years.
Deven Powers’s career doesn’t just stop there. He later founded several brands like The Black Film Festival Los Angeles, Mr.Hollywood Magazine, Mr.Hollywood Blogs, Mr.Hollywood Films, Mr.Hollywood TV Show, and Discover My Music Radio. With such an incredible work ethic, Deven landed on The Buzz Magazine’s cover in May, Star Central Magazine in July, Global Millionaire Magazine, and Famous & Savage. He also recently released a song called “I Got California Love,” an anthem for the summer. The music video was released earlier in July and has already been featured on one of television’s biggest programs, MTV.
Despite how busy he is, Deven always finds the time and energy to do everything he’s passionate about. He is currently working on a film titled “The Bad Boyz of Hollywood,” directed by Bryan Cortez and starring Deven himself along with Khalil Kharraz. The Bad Boyz of Hollywood is a suspenseful drama film that is set to be released in 2021.
