While the latest addition to Hollywood’s Spider-Man franchise gained over $1.7 billion in earnings globally, becoming one of 2018’s biggest box office hits since the pandemic started, it couldn’t make those box office records into award golds.
The movie—which has the three Spideys Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire as stars portraying Peter Parker— did end up as an Oscar nominee for Best Visual Effects.
“No Way Home” has always been a hundred-to-one shot in the Best Picture category, and it’s not really standard for an Academy film to bounce around between different multiverses. Even recent years have seen only a few superhero movies gain traction at all with major Oscar awards other than technical ones.
The first-ever Marvel movie to secure a Best Picture nomination is “Black Panther” (2018), and DC preceded with “Joker” (2019). In 2019, Miles Morales, another Spidey, snagged an Oscar with “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” for Best Animated Feature Film.
The swing to the box office summit and slinging in good reviews didn’t stop a few fans from thinking that these would lead up award ceremonies.
There is still a great deal of celebrating to be done in the multiverse: “No Way Home” will contend for Best Visual Effects together with MCU’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings.”
The film earned a good amount of praise and titles, while the cast individually earned attention from the Oscars. Garfield is a Best Actor nominee for his latest Netflix Originals “Tick, Tick… Boom!” On the other hand, Spidey costar Benedict Cumberbatch snagged a Best Actor nomination for “The Power of the Dog” as well. J.K. Simmons, who is cast in the movie as J. Jonah Jameson, also secured a Best Supporting Actor nomination for “Being the Ricardos.”
