Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One recently premiered in theaters worldwide. Our post “Next Year’s Highly Awaited Movies and Stars” lists this as one of the most anticipated action/adventure movies in 2023, and it did not disappoint. The spy series has been hitting cinema screens since the success of its first installment in 1996, and this latest Mission Impossible film did not disappoint—in fact, it earned $23.8 million in its first two days.

Its success can be attributed to the franchise’s intriguing storyline, as well as the thrilling stunts that wow the audience. Moreover, Tom Cruise—who plays the main character, Ethan Hunt—does most of the stunts himself! Aside from this, the actor is known for his stylish looks in the film—notably, his eyewear.

Before diving into Cruise’s newest iconic eyewear in the most recent Mission Impossible, let’s take a look at the most iconic eyewear collaborations he’s done in past movies:

Cruise’s Past Eyewear Collaborations for Films

L.G.R.

Cruise is well-known for playing cool and charming characters, which calls for equally cool eyewear. In Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015), Italian company L.G.R. provided him with its Tangeri and COMOROS sunglasses. The Tangeri features large lenses with thin, black frames. Hunt made a splash wearing it in a scene with Ilsa Faust (portrayed by Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson) by a pool, paired with a smart-looking suit. Meanwhile, you’ll recognize the thicker COMOROS frames from the film’s thrilling motorcycle chase—and even the movie poster itself.

Ray-Ban

Apart from Mission: Impossible, Cruise had eyewear partnerships for his other film series: Top Gun. He wore Ray-Ban sunglasses in the first installment in 1986, skyrocketing the brand’s iconic Aviators to legendary status. As a result, he boosted Ray-Ban’s sales by 40%—a huge help, as it was going bankrupt at the time. The Aviators were an apt pair to feature in the film revolving around military pilots, since the sunglasses were originally made to protect them from harmful UV rays when flying. In addition to their functionality, Cruise wearing Aviators in the film made them much cooler—his star power encouraged many others to purchase their own pairs.

Oakley

Although it’s hard to imagine, the newest Mission: Impossible film features even better jaw-dropping stunts than the previous installments. For instance—spoiler incoming—there’s a scene where Hunt rides a motorcycle off a cliff, jumps off, and parachutes his way down. This is where Cruise wore Oakley sunglasses that were custom-made for the scene and film. Oakley is popular for making sports performance eyewear that features the latest technologies—not only to protect the eyes, but also to top off its wearer’s looks. That’s why Cruise partnered with Oakley to produce the ECLP23 eyewear, which features high-speed protection, an expanded field of view, and Zero Gravity technology to ensure the best fit for his face—and they all guaranteed eye protection for the stunt.

Cartier

Cartier’s CT0038S 016 model sunglasses also made their appearance in the film. These high-end Aviator-style sunglasses are gold-rimmed with blue and gold mirror lenses. Hunt wore these when walking along the Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport (also seen in the trailer’s thumbnail), a new prestigious terminal that will open by the end of the year. They made a great choice using these sunglasses for the scene, as they paired well with the dashing blue suit that Hunt wore and the chandeliers, curving ceiling beams, and blooming pillars that the luxurious terminal offers.

Eyewear is a big part of Tom Cruise’s characters’ looks in films, especially for the newest Mission Impossible movie. In the future, we can surely expect more unique and stylish eyewear worn by senior field agent Ethan Hunt. For more articles like these, keep browsing through Entertainment Monthly News.
