Film Executive and Producer on the Rise: Sophie Changhui Shi’s Trailblazing Journey in the International Film Industry

In the dynamic realm of international cinema, Sophie Changhui Shi has rapidly emerged as a film executive and producer to watch. Recently appointed as an acquisition and production executive at EST N8, her influence spans from the prestigious corridors of Cannes to the bustling film markets of Asia. 

EST N8, an international finance, production, and sales entity born from the collaboration of EST Studios and Bangkok’s N8 Studios, saw Shi’s potential early on. Her appointment reflects the company’s commitment to bridging East and West in the cinematic landscape. Shi, based in Los Angeles, reports directly to Tenten Wei, Head of Studios at EST N8. Her role, pivotal in nature, involves forging strategic partnerships with Asian production studios and representing Asian and Asian-American films in international markets.

Shi’s acumen in negotiation was evident as she secured international sales rights for titles like “Chabak,” “Surf Nation,” Tribeca title “ASOG”, Busan competition documentary “April Tragedy” and the Cannes market title “The Harvest.” Her expertise also played a key role in the Southeast Asian sales of “Chabak.” 

Demonstrating her commitment to cultural diversity and representation, Shi launched the inaugural API Film Night at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television this year. This initiative reflects her dedication to promoting Asian and Pacific Islander narratives within the film industry. In the realm of production, Shi’s portfolio is equally impressive. She’s currently developing an untitled action sci-fi film set in Southeast Asia for EST N8 and has taken the reins of the indie feature “Outbound,” directed by Ziyao Liu, currently in post-production. 

Shi’s career trajectory was marked by significant roles even before joining EST N8. She was a creative executive at the production company of current AMPAS President Janet Yang, contributing to the development of an upcoming Bruce Lee biopic by Ang Lee. Her experience also includes stints at HBO, working on projects like “Staircase” and “We Own This City,” and at NBC Universal for the second season of “Good Girls.” EST Studios continues to make strides in the global film arena. “K-Pops!,” directed by Grammy winner Anderson .Paak. Meanwhile, N8 Studios, has ventured into global storytelling through partnerships with Thai studio GDH559. 

N8’s portfolio includes the Thai horror film “Home For Rent” and Pawo Dorji’s “The Monk And The Gun,” Bhutan’s official entry for the 2024 Academy Awards. Sophie Changhui Shi’s ascent in the international film industry is a testament to her exceptional talent and vision.
