How I Met Your Mother is finally getting a sequel after seven years. The sequel series titled How I Met Your Father will premiere on Hulu starring Hilary Duff as the lead character Sophie.

How I Met Your Mother is a sitcom created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays for CBS. It ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014. The series starred Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, and Alyson Hannigan, while Bob Saget provided the voice of the older version of Radnor’s character. The show follows Ted Mosby and his group of friends living in New York. In the year 2030, Ted tells his son and daughter the events of his life that led him to meet their mother.

The show was popular throughout its run, although there were mixed reviews as the show progressed into later seasons. In 2013, CBS and 20th Century Fox Television announced they would launch a spin-off called How I Met Your Dad, possibly featuring a new bar and a different set of characters who would not have tied into the original show. But CBS did not pick up the pilot in 2014. Two more attempts to create a spin-off, re-titled How I Met Your Father, were made in 2016 and 2017, but both versions of the project did not move forward.

That all changed on April 21 of this year when it was announced that the sequel series was ordered on Hulu. This sequel will follow Sophie, played by Hilary Duff, as she tells her son the story of how she met his father. The events of the show will take place in 2021 as Sophie and her group of friends navigates adulthood, figure out what they want with their lives, and explore what it means to find love in the age of dating apps. It remains unclear if the events in this new series will tie in with the original.

How I Met Your Father will be written and co-produced by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who have worked together as co-showrunners on This Is Us and co-creators of Love, Victor. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are also on board as executive producers for this sequel. Hilary Duff is also set to produce the series aside from starring in it. 20th Television will also produce this show like it did in the original.

In a statement to Variety, Hilary Duff said, “I have been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters, and I am looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie.” As a fan of the original series, Duff shared that she is both honored and nervous that Bays and Thomas have trusted her with this long-awaited sequel.

Craig Erwich, president of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, says, “How I Met Your Mother continues to be one of the most innovative and beloved comedies on television. Isaac and Elizabeth have an inspired take on this new version that honors what Carter and Craig created in the original and moves the franchise forward.”

How I Met Your Father will air on Hulu as a ten-episode series. Release dates have yet to be announced.
