Author Tejas Desai continues to build on his expansive literary project The Human Tragedy, with the release of Bad Americans: Part II, which follows Bad Americans: Part I. Known for his layered storytelling and multi-perspective narratives, Desai’s newest work deepens his exploration of identity, human behavior, and the complexity of shared experience.
Central to Bad Americans: Part II is a structure that brings together multiple voices, each distinct in tone and perspective. Desai explains that while the process of creation is demanding, the characters themselves often arrive fully formed. “The characters just came out of me, fully realized already,” he shares, noting that much of the refinement comes later through revisions and adjustments to story arcs and narrative placement.
A defining feature of the book is its central setting, The Getaway, a fictionalized environment that functions almost as a character in its own right. Unlike the real-world locations that shaped his earlier works, like The Brotherhood Chronicle, an international crime trilogy, this constructed space was designed with intention.
Desai describes it as “an intentional attempt to get people of different backgrounds together and see what would happen,” using the backdrop of the pandemic to heighten tension and interaction. The result is a contained environment where differing perspectives collide, allowing the narrative to explore how individuals respond under pressure.
The novel’s structure reflects what Desai refers to as a sense of “controlled chaos.” His writing process involves detailed outlining followed by more intuitive rewrites, creating a balance between precision and spontaneity.
This approach supports a narrative that includes multiple internal stories, some as expansive as novellas, woven into a larger frame. Managing these elements required what Desai describes as “a balancing act,” ensuring that each tale remains engaging while contributing to the broader narrative.
Rather than offering clear resolutions, Bad Americans: Part II invites readers to engage with ambiguity. Desai acknowledges that while definitive answers can be satisfying, they are often limited in real life.
“It’s rare that you get complete resolutions or closures,” he explains, adding that his work aims to exist in the space between answers and the questions that follow.
Following the completion of this complex, multi-year project, Desai is already looking toward future work. He indicates that The Human Tragedy series will likely continue, but probably after he shifts to nonfiction projects, including a travel memoir and a broader exploration of his literary movement, The New Wei.
At the same time, he continues to engage with audiences through speaking events, where he values the opportunity for direct interaction. “I love connecting with audiences and finding out how they reacted to the book,” he says, emphasizing the importance of dialogue around his work.
With Bad Americans: Part II, Desai builds on a narrative framework that prioritizes complexity, perspective, and authenticity. As the series evolves, the work continues to examine how individuals explore identity, belief, and interaction within shared spaces, offering readers an experience that reflects the layered nature of real life.
The book is now available on Amazon and through other booksellers. Readers can find out more about Tejas Desai on his Instagram.
