Among all of Hollywood’s stars, Jake Gyllenhaal has recently been shining as the subject of much discussion due to his upcoming projects. Following his 2022 collaboration with his sister, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jake’s is rumored to headline a new big-ticket release. Known as one of his generation’s most versatile actors, he is allegedly in talks to play Reed Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reboot of the superhero classic Fantastic Four. This comes after his celebrated role in the MCU’s Spiderverse.
The actor’s superhero franchise ventures
As a long-time actor who has gained a steady following over the years, Gyllenhaal’s turn as Mysterio in the MCU film Spider-Man: Far From Home back in 2018 was an exciting time for his fans. His role as the supervillain who approached Spider-Man as a friend, only to ultimately betray him, was a pivotal moment that had avid Marvel fans praising his charismatic and layered depiction in the movie.
Considering his popularity from this MCU role alone, fans were delighted by the rumors that Gyllenhaal was considered to play Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four reboot. Allegedly, speculation began when industry insider Daniel RPK mentioned that casting for the role had resumed following the end of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strike, which prevented studios from working on most projects. However, the buzz surrounding the film reboot also named a few actors being considered for the role. This includes Penn Badgley, Matt Smith, Dev Patel, and Adam Driver. As of November 2023, there has been no confirmation on whether Gyllenhaal is expected to take up the role of Reed Richards. If rumor mills are to be believed, though, the Oscar-nominated actor is the front-runner.
Other projects and commitments
Considering his involvement in other successful films such as Donnie Darko (2001), Brokeback Mountain (2005), and Nightcrawler (2014), it is no surprise that Gyllenhaal remains booked and busy. Since his involvement in Spider-Man, Gyllenhaal has announced that he is set to star in another superhero film, Prophet, though there have yet to be any announcements regarding its release.
Additionally, he has also ventured out to do work outside of acting. One of his recent partnerships was for Prada sunglasses. One of the world’s top fashion houses, Prada, is known for their luxurious style. This includes heavy use of bold frames and bright materials that echo an elite life. In Gyllenhaal’s ambassadorship, he is the face of this exclusive lifestyle under the Linea Rossa Eyewear campaign. Working with Prada was a meaningful experience for the actor, claiming that it helped him “find his identity” outside of acting while being able to share new sides to him throughout the campaign.
In line with this, Gyllenhaal has also secured another luxury campaign with Ginori 1735 design porcelain this year, making him the first actor to be the face of the brand. This development is considered to be an interesting brand partnership, as Gyllenhaal was tapped for his timeless elegance that embodies the brand’s ideals while also giving him an avenue to express a more creative side outside of acting.
What to look forward to
Although there are no updates yet on whether Gyllenhaal will join the MCU once again for another project, reports from Yahoo! Movies predict that confirmation can be expected soon, as the movie is slated for a release in May 2025. In the meantime, fans of Gyllenhaal can anticipate his upcoming film, Road House, where he stars as an ex-UFC middleweight fighter working at a roadhouse in Florida. The film is expected to be released sometime in 2024, which can hopefully satiate fans until his next big career announcement.
