For Miss Freddye, the blues has never been about fame, recognition, or applause. It has always been about people. It is about the stories they carry, the burdens they bear, the victories they celebrate, and the healing they discover along the way. That commitment to authenticity has helped transform the Pittsburgh native into one of the region’s most beloved musical ambassadors and earned her the well-deserved title of the “Lady of the Blues.”
While her reputation continues to grow, Miss Freddye remains grounded in the values that first led her to the stage: honesty, perseverance, and a deep respect for the power of music to connect people from all walks of life.
Looking back on her journey, she points to several defining moments that helped shape her career. One of the earliest came when she joined her first band, Blues Music Works (BMW). At the time, she admits that fear threatened to hold her back, but the band’s leader saw something in her that she had not yet fully recognized in herself.
“He believed in me when I was so afraid,” she recalls. That vote of confidence became a foundation upon which she built her career, reminding her that talent often needs encouragement before it can truly flourish.
Another milestone has been witnessing younger audiences embrace the music she loves. The blues has sometimes been unfairly characterized as a genre tied exclusively to the past, but Miss Freddye sees something entirely different. She sees continuity. She sees tradition being passed from one generation to the next.
Equally meaningful are the musicians she has encountered throughout the years. Whether performing alongside local artists or nationally recognized performers, she has always been inspired by those who share the same passion and commitment that drive her own work.
Her connection to the blues began long before she ever stepped into a recording studio. As a child, she listened to her mother play blues records around the house. Those songs made a lasting impression.
“The blues tells stories,” she says. “It cuts deep into life’s journeys, the legacy of life, and the times of many souls who bear the burdens of trials and tribulations.”
That emotional honesty continues to guide her performances today. Every appearance is rooted in the belief that music should serve a purpose beyond entertainment. When she takes the stage, she reminds herself that the evening is not about her.
“It is about someone in the audience who needs to be part of what they hear and what they need to feel within,” she explains. “It may help them forget, for that moment, their troubles.”
The same philosophy carries into the recording process. Miss Freddye is determined to capture every note with precision and sincerity, repeating takes until she discovers exactly the right tone, pitch, and emotional depth. For her, great music does not simply communicate; it resonates.
That commitment to truth also extends to her songwriting. Over the years, personal triumphs and hardships have found their way into her music, becoming the foundation of songs shaped by wisdom, faith, and experience.
“I have written songs when I was at my lowest and at my highest points in life,” she says. “Things that I look back on, I build on with purpose, belief, and conviction.”
Those principles are especially evident in the new single she is currently preparing to release this fall. Inspired by the experiences of a close friend who works as a nurse, the song explores the struggles and hardships detailed in the friend’s recently published book.
Reading the account left a profound impression on Miss Freddye.
“It brought tears to my eyes,” she says. “God brought her out of the swamp and into His light.”
Determined to share that message of hope, resilience, and faith with listeners, she transformed the story into music. When her friend heard an early version of the track, the response confirmed that Miss Freddye had captured the heart of the story.
As excited as she is about the upcoming release, Miss Freddye believes the song also reflects how much she has grown as an artist.
“I am more confident now,” she says. “I know what is expected of me.”
At the same time, she remains deeply humble about her calling.
“What I do is not mine to keep.”
That perspective helps explain how she has managed to honor the rich traditions of blues music while developing a sound that is distinctly her own. Drawing inspiration from the artists cherished by her parents and grandparents, she has created what she proudly describes as the “Miss Freddye sound” a combination of powerful emotion, soulful energy, and deeply personal storytelling.
Along the way, she has shared the stage with an impressive collection of performers, including Kenny Neal, Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, Taz Cru, the Nied’s Hotel Band, and numerous ensembles celebrating women in blues music.
Yet, despite all she has accomplished, Miss Freddye remains focused on what comes next. She hopes to continue recording new material, collaborate with more songwriters, and help bring their stories to audiences around the world.
Most of all, she wants listeners to know that she has heard them.
For years, fans have asked for more music, more performances, and more opportunities to experience the unmistakable spirit of the Lady of the Blues. Judging by her enthusiasm and determination, they will not have to wait long.
For Miss Freddye, the next chapter is already beginning, and as always, the story is being told one song at a time.
