Transcending Cultural Boundaries: A Profound Exploration of Friendship in ‘The Oneida Man’ by Weam Namou

By: Lamourie Media

In the rich literary landscape of contemporary storytelling, rare are the gems that genuinely delve into the intricacies of cross-cultural explorations and intercultural dialogues. One such  is the book, The Oneida Man. Penned by renowned Iraqi-American author, Weam Namou, The Oneida Man unravels an empowering narrative of friendship and understanding against the backdrop of a city in Michigan, affectionately dubbed ‘Little Baghdad’. This poignant tale, in essence, explores the profound friendship between the author, a woman of Chaldean descent, and a Native American man.

Encompassing a broad range of themes – cultural identity, language, the essence of human connection, history and justice – The Oneida Man immerses readers in a journey of the heart, a quest of self-discovery and profound wisdom. It is a stirring testament to the transformative powers of friendship and understanding, and the enduring bonds that transcend cultural boundaries.

The story steers beyond surface-level exchanges, moving into territories that demand thoughtfulness and depth. Namou recounts how her three decades-long friendship with the Oneida Man began at a video store she managed where he was a regular customer. This simple camaraderie gradually evolved into a significant relationship, fueled by shared experiences, empathy and a shared willingness to listen.

Intriguing insights are splayed out through the narrative with a generous honesty, particularly about cultural traits and the concept of time and life. A memorable anecdote springs when Namou visited the Oneida Man at his sister’s junkyard. His response to her query about the completion of his micro home remodeling, encapsulates his life philosophy – “My whole lifetime. I work slow,” he said, manifesting an ethos of living free from the boisterous speed of modern life.

The reflections triggered by this extraordinary friendship extend beyond individual experiences to more extensive socio-cultural contexts. Namou invites us to engage in a conversation about the state of Native American life and the challenges faced by minority communities, like the Chaldeans. She underscores the potency of ancestral wisdom in healing and growth and the importance of releasing stories that no longer serve communities.

An intriguing parallel is drawn between the paths of the Chaldean author and the Oneida Man. Both are natives of their birth lands – the former to Mesopotamia or modern-day Iraq and the latter to North America – bound by shared ancestries that harbor a strong relationship with nature and the Creator. The external world is perceived as a mirror of their internal states, with their navigation through life and its tribulations influenced deeply by their relationship with the Divine.

However, in contrast, the Oneida Man’s life is one of seclusion with no digital footprint or social embellishments. In stark contrast, Namou lives an extensively public life, often engaging in enriching cultural dialogues through her work at the Chaldean Cultural Center. Again, a tickling paradox at play!

Engaging with The Oneida Man, offers readers a fresh perspective ablaze with the wisdom of traditional approaches such as using common sense, slowing down, interacting with nature, and the need to strike a balance between the physical and spiritual world.

Namou’s The Oneida Man eloquently reminds us that regardless of our race or ethnicity, we are all interconnected with the universe. It champions an open heart and mind as a conduit for wisdom to pass through – from humanity, the animal kingdom, from nature – in ways we least expect.

The Oneida Man is not just a book. It is a prolonged and shared meditation on life, where wisdom manifests in raw and often unexpected forms. A testament to friendship beyond cultural differences, it illuminates the enduring bonds that connect us all, and the richness that lies at the crossroads of culture and understanding. Cherishing such bonds and fostering such understanding and empathy is the path forward for a more harmonious and interconnected world.

When asked what she would  say to others who are trying to do the work to build understanding in communities, in workplaces, across nations, Namou says :

“Communication is vital to any relationship, even your relationship with yourself, but most assume communication is about talking. They neglect the listening part, genuine listening and not just saying, “I hear you, but…” Our modern-day world keeps producing more and more noise when we need a lot more quiet so we can hear what our intuition and others are saying.  My Native American friend shared controversial ideas about history, such as the moon landing, Cleopatra, the judicial system, among other things. I listened without judgment but with lots of questions and intrigue because I like being an independent thinker and not just following the herd. After our conversations, I would do my research and come to my own conclusions. “
